Remembering Daniel Heartz
1928 – 2019

Daniel Heartz, 1928 - 2019

The Mozart Society of America is sad to report the passing, on 24 November, of Daniel Heartz, Professor Emeritus of the University of California, and an honorary member of our Society. Prof. Heartz was one of the leading scholars of the music of Mozart, and of eighteenth-century music generally, and in 2011 he received the MSA’s Marjorie Weston Emerson Award for his book Mozart, Haydn, and Early Beethoven, 1781-1802 (W. W. Norton, 2009). His major gift to MSA in 2015, subsequently augmented by the generous donations of MSA members and others, established the Society’s Heartz Fund, which supports publications and research on Mozart, particularly by younger scholars. Fuller tributes and remembrances of Prof. Heartz will appear in the MSA Newsletter and on our website.
